Metrogyl gel is a reliable product in dentistry

Metrogyl Denta is a dental medicinal product produced by pharmaceutical companies in the form of a gel. Thanks to the combined composition, including:

  • antibiotic;
  • antiseptic,
  • the medicine has a wide spectrum of antimicrobial action and is recommended by experts for use by both adults and children over 6 years of age.

The main active ingredients of the drug are metronidazole and chlorhexidine.

Metronidazole, known for its antimicrobial properties, is successfully used in medicine for:

  • peptic ulcers;
  • chronic colitis;
  • inflammation of the urinary system;
  • genital infections,
  • as well as for the purpose of preventing complications that often arise after surgery.

Chlorhexidine is an effective antiseptic used in medical practice:

  • during preoperative treatment of hands;
  • when cleaning medical premises;
  • for disinfection of instruments.

Thanks to its gel consistency, Metrogyl is successfully used in dentistry, but in addition, the product can help solve some cosmetic problems and stop the inflammatory processes of the external genitalia.

Metrogil:

instructions for use

In dental practice, the drug is used to treat:

  • gingivitis;
  • periodontitis;
  • bacterial stomatitis;
  • lip inflammation;
  • inflammatory processes of the hoods over wisdom teeth;
  • inflammation of the mucous membrane;
  • alviolite of the socket of an extracted tooth,
  • It is also used as an additional agent in the treatment of periodontitis and periodontal abscess.

However, despite the effectiveness of Metrogyl, the instructions of which recommend its use for these diseases, an experienced doctor may prescribe other drugs, depending on the individual characteristics of the patient’s body and the complexity of the case.

Metrogyl denta goes on sale in laminated plastic tubes of 20 grams and is sold without a prescription.

Metrogyl, reviews of which from experts allow us to recommend to patients a relatively inexpensive and effective antiseptic drug, is often used as an everyday means of oral hygiene, which helps prevent many inflammatory processes.

Treatment of children: features and recommendations

The drug is suitable for the treatment and prevention of oral diseases in school-age children. Dentists allow the use of the gel for children over 6 years of age. At this age, the most common childhood disease is stomatitis, which can have an infectious or non-infectious etiology. "Metrogil Denta" is suitable for the treatment of aphthous stomatitis - the most painful form of the inflammatory process on the mucous membranes, characterized by the formation of multiple defects in the form of painful ulcers and erosions.

Can the product be used by children?

The drug helps speed up the healing of the mucous membrane, relieve inflammation, reduce pain and prevent the development of infectious forms of pathology. It should be used in the same way as the instructions for adult patients, but the number of uses should be reduced to 2 times a day. The duration of treatment is 10 days.

Note! The same scheme is used for the prevention of alveolitis and periodontal diseases after the removal of milk teeth or, if necessary, extraction of a permanent tooth.

The gel can be used from the age of six

Application benefits

Despite the rather low concentration of active substances and the lack of analgesic effect, Metrogyl Denta gel has a number of advantages over more modern drugs used in medicine, for example:

  • the drug is perfectly fixed on the mucous membranes;
  • has a fairly high efficiency,
  • In addition, its affordable cost allows you to regularly use this product for preventive purposes.

The active components of the drug allow you to influence pathogenic microorganisms, but are not able to block mediators of inflammatory processes in tissues, therefore, in the treatment of many diseases, experts recommend combined procedures to achieve a more effective result.

Possible contraindications and side effects

The drug is considered one of the safest dental products intended for the treatment and prevention of infectious and inflammatory processes in the oral cavity. Metrogyl Denta has no contraindications for use except for individual reactions of intolerance or hypersensitivity to the components of the drug (including nitroimidazole derivatives).

Therapy is well tolerated in most cases. Side effects during the use of Metrogyl Dent are rarely recorded, but the possibility of their occurrence cannot be completely excluded.

Possible side effects of the drug include the following:

  • rash on the mucous membranes at the site of use;
  • burning and itching;
  • nettle fever (a type of allergic dermatitis, manifested by the rapid formation of pale pink itchy blisters).

Side effects of the gel

Important! Approximately 2% of patients experienced moderate headaches during treatment with Metrogyl Denta. Experts attribute this to the presence of metronidazole and some substances used as auxiliary ingredients - for example, sodium saccharinate.

Metrogyl Denta for stomatitis

Stomatitis is a fairly common pathology of the mucous membrane, occurring in both adult patients and children, however, Metrogyl is effective only for bacterial forms of the disease and when diagnosing them, the drug allows for healing.

To heal ulcers, in these cases, applications are recommended, but the drug is absolutely ineffective for stomatitis caused by viruses.

When treating gums, the drug is applied to the affected areas of the mucous membranes, for example, using cotton swabs. The course of treatment for stomatitis lasts for 7-10 days, procedures are carried out 2-3 times a day.

Alviolite therapy involves placing a small amount of gel into the inflamed hole.

When teething through wisdom teeth, it is recommended to use the drug as a toothpaste, applying the product to the inflamed gums. In this case, using a toothbrush with gel, both teeth and gums are treated, but you should refrain from eating and drinking for half an hour so that a protective film is formed that will protect the oral cavity from pathogenic microorganisms.

Dosage and duration of therapy

Metrogyl Denta should be applied in a thin layer to painful and inflamed areas. After tooth extraction, the first application must be carried out within 30 minutes after surgery. In the future, you should treat the area of the hole and gums around 2-3 times a day. The course of treatment and prophylactic therapy is usually 7-10 days. Even if the patient feels well or visible improvements appear before this period, it is not recommended to stop treatment, since the soft tissues remain vulnerable to negative factors for a week after extraction. Complete local immunity will be restored approximately 10-14 days after removal.

Features of use

The use of Metrogil Dent gel, especially in the initial stages of treatment, can cause bleeding gums, increased swelling and burning. Such symptoms may appear within a few days, but if they continue, you should stop using the drug.

Despite the fact that no obvious contraindications or side effects have been identified for the drug, Metrogyl is not recommended for use for the treatment of:

  • children under 6 years of age;
  • women in the first trimester of pregnancy,
  • In addition, it is not advisable to use the drug while breastfeeding and, if it is necessary to use it, you will have to stop breastfeeding.

Many experts recommend avoiding drinking alcohol during treatment with Metrogyl gel, since it contains an antibiotic that can be absorbed into the blood, even when applying applications.

In addition, the use of the drug should be discontinued at the first signs of intolerance to the drug.

Studies have shown a negative effect of the drug when taken together with anticoagulants, since the active substances of Metrogyl can enhance their effect, which can cause bleeding.

Experts recommend careful use of the drug, since, for example, swallowing the gel can have serious consequences:

  • nausea;
  • dizziness,
  • which is facilitated by metronidazope, which is part of the product.

Why is the drug prescribed after tooth extraction?

After a tooth is extracted, an open wound remains on the surface of the gum, allowing access to exposed bone tissue. To prevent the inflammatory process, immediately after removal, the doctor places a gauze swab soaked in hemostatic and antiseptic compounds into the hole. The tampon or turunda must be kept for 15-30 minutes, after which it must be removed.

Wisdom tooth removal

Within 20-30 minutes after surgery, the hole is filled with blood, which quickly coagulates and forms a dense blood clot. This clot protects the wound from dirt, germs, bacteria and food debris. It is very important not to touch the clot with your tongue or allow it to dislodge in order to prevent infection from entering the socket and avoid inflammation. Before surgery, be sure to warn your doctor about taking any medications, because some of them (for example, drugs based on acetylsalicylic acid) can thin the blood and increase the risk of postoperative bleeding.

After surgery, Metrogyl Denta is prescribed to prevent infectious and inflammatory processes, reduce swelling and pain, and disinfect the oral cavity. The most common complications of extraction include the following pathologies:

  • alveolitis – inflammation of the tooth socket (“dry socket”);
  • infectious lesions of the soft tissues surrounding the tooth;
  • periostitis – damage to the periosteum, accompanied by swelling of the gum tissue and severe pain;
  • purulent abscess.

"Metrogil Denta" is used for various pathologies

For several days after surgery, the patient may experience moderate or intense pain, swelling and swelling of the gums. The bleeding should completely subside on the third day - if this does not happen, you should consult a doctor.
